In the name of religion

622 to 630, Arabian Peninsula. Early Muslim community conflicts under Muhammad included battles such as Badr and the conquest of Mecca. Fighting was justified in Islamic terms as defence of the Muslim community, struggle against persecution, and establishing God’s rule over society and sacred space.

Fact

Hinduism teaches that reality is guided by dharma, a principle of moral order and personal duty that shapes how individuals are expected to live in a way that supports balance in family life, society, nature, and the wider universe.

Early gods

Early gods did not reveal the nature of reality. They revealed the anxieties of the people who created them. Rain gods reflected fear of hunger. War gods reflected fear of loss. Fertility gods reflected fear of extinction. Religion began not as a search for truth, but as a strategy for survival. It negotiated with nature by inventing negotiators. That strategy worked well enough to endure, long after the original problems could be understood without appealing to invisible beings who demanded blood, obedience, and belief in exchange for outcomes they never actually controlled.

Quote of the day

“We must question the story logic of having an all knowing, all powerful God, who creates faulty humans and then blames them for his own mistakes.” Tim Minchin.
