Weird and Religious

In parts of medieval Europe, people believed in “ordeals” as a way to let God decide guilt. An accused person might carry a red hot iron or plunge a hand into boiling water. If the wound healed cleanly, that was taken as proof of innocence.

In the name of religion

2018, Sri Lanka tensions. Sinhalese Buddhist extremist monks and mobs incited violence against Muslim communities, including riots and property destruction. Agitators justified actions as protecting Buddhism and the nation from perceived Islamic religious and cultural threat.

Fact

In Christianity, belief centres on one God understood as creator of the universe and source of all life and moral order.

Religion and Storytelling

Storytelling is central to religion. Humans do not think in statistics but in narratives. A story with characters, motives, and consequences is easier to remember and transmit than a complex explanation or an honest admission of ignorance. Gods became characters in humanity’s longest-running story. They explained the seasons, justified suffering, and promised resolution. Each retelling polished the narrative. Gaps were filled, contradictions ignored, and authority added. Over generations, stories turned into myths, myths into doctrines, and doctrines into sacred truth. The original fear that inspired them was forgotten, but the structures remained.

Quote of the day

“One man’s religion is another man’s belly laugh.” Robert A. Heinlein.

Religious Crooks

Claude Vorilhon, known as Raël, founded the Raëlian movement claiming extraterrestrial revelations, building an international organisation funded through member contributions, events, and paid programs, with critics describing it as personality centred and commercially structured. For more information, google the name. Today we took a look at yet another religious crook but there are hundreds of thousands of them. You could spend a lifetime researching the topic.
