Why religion survives

One of the ways religion persists is through fear, which anchors it and makes it necessary. Fear of death, of punishment, of meaninglessness, of being wrong. Religion offers answers to these fears but also threatens consequences for rejection. Hell, judgement, loss of salvation, and divine anger keep belief in place long after confidence fades. The fear does not need to be conscious to function. It hums quietly beneath thought, discouraging honest reflection.

Quote of the day

“Religion is the masterpiece of the art of animal training, for it trains people as to how they shall think.” Arthur Schopenhauer.
