Weird and Religious

In medieval Europe, animal trials were a real legal practice. Pigs, rats and even insects were sometimes put on trial for crimes such as destroying crops or killing a child. They were assigned lawyers, witnesses were heard, and punishments could include execution or banishment, all under a religious worldview in which moral order applied to all creation.

In the name of religion

1096, Rhineland in present day Germany. Christian Crusader mobs attacked Jewish communities in cities such as Worms and Mainz, killing many people. Attackers claimed they were purifying Christendom before heading east, framing massacres as religious duty against those they labelled enemies of Christianity.

Fact

In Buddhism, different schools have developed, and Buddhism includes traditions such as Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana, each with its own practices and interpretations while sharing core teachings.

Religion, the great illusion

One of religion’s most consistent benefits is the sense of purpose it provides. Belief in a higher power offers a narrative in which individual lives matter, suffering has meaning, and events are part of a grand design. This sense of purpose can guide decisions and create psychological stability, especially in times of hardship. The fact that the foundation of this purpose is false does not diminish its function. Humans did not evolve to prioritise truth. They evolved to maintain workable mental models that support survival. A coherent illusion can be as stabilising as an accurate one, sometimes even more so.

“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” Carl Sagan.

Religious Crooks

Mary Baker Eddy founded Christian Science and promoted spiritual healing through her teachings and books, building a tightly controlled religious publishing structure that critics argued turned theology into a highly profitable, centrally managed enterprise. For more information, google the name. Almost all of the crooks appearing in this section have their own wikipedia page. History tells us that wherever fools gathered, there was always a religious crook to take advantage of them. The best way to stop the crooks is not to be a fool.
