In the name of religion

1478 onward, Spain. The Spanish Inquisition targeted Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity but were suspected of false belief. Arrests, torture, and executions were justified as defending Catholic orthodoxy, purifying society, and saving souls from heresy and divine punishment.

Fact

In Zoroastrianism, heaven and hell are part of belief, and Zoroastrianism links these states to the balance of a person’s moral life.

The evolution of Gods

As societies evolved, their gods evolved with them. Early gods were local and limited, preoccupied with crops, fertility, weather, and war. Later gods became moral overseers, reflecting the needs of larger and more complex civilisations that required law and stability. The divine personality expanded as human political structures expanded, turning kings into divine figures, laws into sacred commandments, and morality into cosmic order. The evolution of gods traces the evolution of society because gods are historical artefacts rather than eternal truths.

Quote of the day

“Religion is a culture of faith, science is a culture of doubt.” Richard Feynman.
